CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Fog crept back into the room, the tingling flowing through Kailani’s body in one brief wave. She didn’t fight it. She didn’t want to look at those people anymore, didn’t want to see the bodies and the blood. As Grayson’s office came back into focus, Kailani’s head pounded against her skull. All she wanted to do was crawl back into bed, back home, in Saxton. Drink some lavender moon tea and listen to Mom and Dad’s crazy stories.

Blood magic… Never in a million years did she think something like that could be real.

“Thank you, Josie, for showing her the truth.”

Josie nodded, standing and bowing to Grayson before walking towards the exit. “Good luck, Kailani,” she said, closing the doors behind her.

Kailani couldn’t speak. She couldn’t think. She was in over her head. This type of magic wasn’t supposed to exist…

“Kailani, it’s okay.” Grayson reached out for her, but she pulled away.

His voice was soothing, just like Mom’s, but it brought her no comfort. Still, she didn’t look at him. She didn’t want to see the look on his face.

Burying her head in her hands, she let her racing heart slow. “So, Azarro…”

A shiver shot down her spine just mentioning his name. Her grandmother’s sunken body flashed through her mind. Azarro’s knife, his black eyes. Words wouldn’t form.

Grayson let out a breath. “The day of the council murders, Azarro performed blood magic to lock the gods in the mountain pass. He hired the magicless to murder the royals, because he knew we would not go to war over the murder of his brother.”

Kailani lifted her head up, but she kept her eyes trained on the grain of the wooden table. She couldn’t meet Grayson’s eyes. Shivering, she wrapped her robe tightly around herself. “But why did he want war?”

“Other than revenge against the magicless? The Azarros wanted power, a lot of it. They believed the Strange mages deserved the throne because they’re the most powerful.”

Kailani scoffed. “Looks like they got their wish.”

Grayson sighed. “Yes, but things didn’t go exactly as planned for them. The Azarros planned the murder of the royal council long before it happened. They wanted a reason to abolish the magicless. A reason to take the throne. The Azarros had gained a following. People who believed in their power, in their hate. In their fear. They created an army, and they made lots of promises. They planned to take over the Kingdom, but there was always something in their way. The rest of the council.”

A shiver raced along Kailan’s spine. In her mind’s eye, the royals sat around the table, oblivious to what was about to happen to them.

“When the Hunters killed Stasorin’s family, Azarro knew he must act quickly or risk losing his momentum for good. He murdered the royal council, then used old blood magic to lock the gods in the mountain pass and siphon their power for himself.”

Kailani froze as a rush of cold swept through her, raising the hair on her arms and sending shivers shooting across her skin.
